HUD Headquarters Moving from DC to Alexandria, VA
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will relocate its headquarters from the deteriorating Robert C. Weaver Federal Building in Washington, D.C., to a modern facility in Alexandria, Virginia, currently occupied by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Announced by HUD Secretary Scott Turner and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, the move is expected to save taxpayers over $500 million in deferred maintenance and $56 million annually in operating costs. Officials cited health and safety hazards at the current headquarters, including mold, asbestos, leaks, and structural failures, as major factors for the relocation. About 2,700 HUD employees will be impacted by the transition. The relocation is part of the Trump administration’s broader push to reduce federal real estate costs and promote fiscal responsibility. The timeline for the move and the future location of the NSF are still being determined.
