Huawei Seeks Dismissal of Federal Indictment
Huawei Technologies has requested a U.S. judge to dismiss significant portions of a federal indictment accusing the company of attempting to steal technology secrets from American rivals and misleading banks about its operations in Iran. In its filing, Huawei argued that there is no evidence of a conspiracy and called the charges part of the Department of Justice's questionable China Initiative, aimed at prosecuting entities linked to China. The company noted that many allegations pertain to activities outside the United States and that the bank fraud accusations are based on a theory rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court. Huawei claims it has been unfairly targeted as a 'prosecutorial target in search of a crime' and maintains its innocence as it awaits a trial set for January 5, 2026. The case stems from a 2018 indictment that led to the controversial detention of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Canada, with charges against her dismissed in 2022. Despite ongoing U.S. restrictions on technology access, Huawei asserts it does not pose a national security threat.
