Minnesota Lawmaker, Husband Killed in Politically Motivated Attack

Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, was fatally shot alongside her husband in a politically motivated attack shortly after casting a controversial vote to eliminate eligibility for undocumented adults to enroll in MinnesotaCare, the state's subsidized healthcare program. Hortman was the sole Democrat to support the measure, which passed narrowly and sparked significant backlash from her party and constituents who viewed it as a betrayal of progressive values. Despite the criticism, Hortman's vote reflected her concern for fiscal responsibility amid a projected $6 billion state budget deficit. The attack also injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who are receiving medical treatment.
