Trump Blames China, India; U.S. Imposes Tariffs on India
At the U.N. General Assembly, President Donald Trump accused China and India of being the 'primary funders' of Russia’s war in Ukraine by continuing to buy Russian oil and criticized some NATO and European countries for still purchasing Russian energy. He warned the United States is prepared to impose a 'very strong round of powerful tariffs' and urged European nations to adopt identical measures to deprive Russia of energy revenue. The administration has already levied an additional 25% tariff on India over its Russian oil purchases, raising total U.S. duties on New Delhi to about 50% — a move India called 'unjustified and unreasonable' — and the remarks come as Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar holds high‑level talks in New York, raising concerns the rhetoric could complicate trade and diplomacy. Trump framed his stance within a broader critique of the U.N., repeated claims he had ended 'seven unendable wars,' proclaimed a 'Golden Age of America,' and noted that some European leaders (notably Hungary) have resisted abandoning Russian energy, underscoring limits to coordinated allied action.
