Chancellor Scholz Meets Kazakhstan President Tokayev

During a historic visit to Kazakhstan, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who asserted that Russia is 'militarily invincible' and warned of serious consequences from the ongoing war in Ukraine. Tokayev emphasized that a missed opportunity for a ceasefire arose from the failure to ratify the Istanbul Agreement, yet he remains hopeful for peace through international initiatives, particularly supporting plans proposed by China and Brazil. He acknowledged Kazakhstan's strategic partnership with Russia while expressing genuine sympathy for the Ukrainian people and affirming that Kazakhstan has no disagreements with Ukraine. The leaders also discussed enhancing economic cooperation, noting a significant increase in trade between Germany and Kazakhstan. A Joint Declaration on cooperation was adopted following their talks. Tokayev's comments reflect the delicate balance Kazakhstan seeks to maintain amid the ongoing conflict.
