FAA Reports Widespread Flight Delays at Multiple U.S. Airports Amid Staffing Shortages in Government Shutdown
Air travel in the U.S. is experiencing significant delays due to staffing shortages linked to the ongoing government shutdown, which has reached its 23rd day. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported staffing issues at 10 locations including New York LaGuardia, Washington's Reagan National, Newark, and Houston Bush airports, with delays averaging over 30 minutes and ground stops issued at some airports. Approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA officers are working without pay, contributing to increased absences and operational challenges. The FAA was already understaffed by about 3,500 controllers before the shutdown, with many working overtime and six-day weeks. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warned of potential widespread flight disruptions during the holiday season, while Democrats blame President Donald Trump and Republicans for the lack of negotiation. Additionally, weather conditions, such as low clouds and fog at San Francisco International Airport, have compounded delays, where over 1,000 employees are also working without pay due to the shutdown.
