Trump, Rubio Secure Congo-Rwanda Peace Agreement
President Donald Trump, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, announced the successful brokering of a peace treaty between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, aiming to end one of Africa's deadliest and longest-running conflicts. The treaty, set to be signed in Washington, addresses decades of violent bloodshed linked to control over mineral-rich eastern provinces, and includes commitments to halt hostilities, disarm rebel groups, and promote economic cooperation. Trump highlighted this achievement as a "Great Day for Africa and the World" and expressed frustration over not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize for these efforts, as well as other diplomatic interventions including those between India and Pakistan and the Middle East. Pakistan has formally nominated Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his role in preventing war between India and Pakistan and his broader peace-building efforts. While the agreement marks a shift in American diplomatic strategy in Africa, analysts caution about unresolved issues such as the role of the M23 militia, which was excluded from the negotiations. The peace deal was initiated at the request of DRC President Félix Tshisekedi after previous reconciliation attempts failed, underscoring the significance of U.S. involvement in the region's stability.
