The Trump administration has ordered an immediate halt to construction on the Empire Wind offshore wind project off the coast of New York, citing concerns that the Biden administration expedited its approval without sufficient analysis. This marks a significant escalation in the administration’s longstanding opposition to offshore wind, as previous actions mostly affected future projects rather than those already permitted and under construction. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum not only paused the Empire Wind project indefinitely but also initiated a broader review of all existing and pending offshore wind permits approved during the Biden era. The move has drawn criticism from renewable energy advocates, who argue that such reversals undermine confidence in U.S. energy investment and threaten jobs and economic growth tied to clean energy. At the same time, the decision is seen as a victory by opponents of offshore wind, including some fishing industry groups. Equinor, the company behind Empire Wind, stated it would engage with federal agencies to address the concerns raised.
