EU Seeks Lower US Wine, Spirits Tariffs After 15% Trade Deal
President Donald Trump's administration has imposed a 15% tariff on most European Union exports, including wine and spirits, despite ongoing efforts by the EU to secure exemptions for these products. This tariff increase has led to higher costs for importers and retailers in the U.S., with wine sellers anticipating further price hikes, especially heading into the holiday season. While the trade deal reached between the U.S. and EU includes tariff reductions on cars and other goods, alcohol products remain subject to the full 15% levy, disappointing European wine and spirits producers. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic acknowledged that negotiations continue and that the door is not closed to future tariff exemptions for wine and spirits. Industry groups on both sides have expressed frustration and urged further negotiations to restore zero tariffs, emphasizing the potential negative impacts on jobs and export growth. Despite the current stalemate, both the EU and U.S. have committed to ongoing dialogue to address these trade challenges.
