Iran Nears Strait of Hormuz Closure Amid Global Oil Security Concerns
Following President Donald Trump's bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities, Iran threatened to close the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which about 20% of global oil consumption passes. China condemned the U.S. strikes and plans to collaborate with Russia at the United Nations to oppose the conflict, while also evacuating Chinese nationals from Iran amid concerns about oil supply disruptions that could further strain its economy. Reports indicate Iranian forces may have begun jamming navigation systems of commercial vessels, including Chinese tankers, effectively disrupting traffic through the strait. The White House and U.S. officials, including press secretary Karoline Leavitt and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, warned Iran that closing the strait would be a 'suicidal' move provoking global opposition. European and African officials, such as Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Ghana's National Petroleum Authority CEO, cautioned Iran against blockade attempts, citing the severe economic repercussions for Iran and the world, and highlighted that Oman’s cooperation would be necessary but unlikely. Overall, there is broad international concern about escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf and efforts to maintain stability in this critical energy route.
