Tokyo Gas Signs 1M Tons LNG Deal Advancing 20M Tons Alaska Pipeline Project
Tokyo Gas has signed a letter of intent to purchase one million tonnes per year of liquefied natural gas from the Alaska LNG project, marking a significant step towards the project's financial closure. The Alaska LNG project, led by Glenfarne Alaska LNG since March 2025, aims for a total export capacity of 20 million tons per year and needs commitments for 16 million tons to secure financing; currently, agreements cover 11 million tons, including buyers from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. The project involves a pipeline transporting natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to an LNG terminal in Nikiski, Alaska, and is planned in two phases: pipeline construction and liquefaction terminal development. Tokyo Gas's involvement continues a historic relationship with Alaska LNG, as it was among the first to import LNG from Alaska 55 years ago, underscoring the strategic importance of Alaska LNG as a supplier for US Pacific allies. Despite growing buyer interest and strong institutional support, concerns about the project's cost competitiveness remain among some Asian buyers. The Alaska LNG project is positioned as the only federally authorized LNG export terminal on the U.S. Pacific Coast, with an anticipated start of LNG exports around 2030 or 2031 if final investment decisions proceed as planned.
