DOJ Sues Oregon, Maine Over Voter Registration Data Violations
The U.S. Department of Justice, under President Donald Trump, has sued the states of Oregon and Maine for allegedly violating federal laws by refusing to provide voter list maintenance information and unredacted electronic copies of statewide voter registration lists. The DOJ claims these refusals breach the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, and the Civil Rights Act, emphasizing the need for electoral integrity and warning of legal consequences for noncompliance. Both states, through their secretaries of state—Shenna Bellows in Maine and Tobias Read in Oregon—have defended their actions, with Bellows citing privacy laws and constitutional protections against federal interference in state elections, calling the DOJ's actions an abuse of power. The DOJ's requests have sparked privacy concerns, especially regarding possible use of the voter data by Homeland Security Investigations, amid longstanding claims by the Trump administration about illegal voting by immigrants. The lawsuits follow similar demands to other states, including Colorado and Washington, some of which have resisted sharing private voter information citing privacy and security concerns. This legal conflict highlights the ongoing tension between federal election oversight efforts and state-level election administration autonomy.
