Democrats Propose Resolution for Emergency Abortions

House Democrats have introduced a resolution asserting that U.S. emergency rooms must provide emergency abortions when a woman's health or life is at risk, despite state-level abortion bans. This initiative follows a concerning report revealing that over 100 pregnant women have been denied necessary care since 2022. The resolution seeks to clarify that abortion is a form of stabilizing care under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires hospitals to treat patients in emergencies. Representatives Emilia Sykes and Mikie Sherrill expressed outrage over the risks to women's lives resulting from unclear state laws. While the resolution aims to address the chaos following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, its passage is uncertain given the Republican-controlled House. Additionally, a Senate version is anticipated from Democratic Senator Patty Murray next week.
