A Cook County judge ruled that Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago violated state and federal environmental laws, operating without a proper permit and killing thousands of fish with its water intake system. The building withdraws approximately 20 million gallons of water daily from the Chicago River for cooling purposes, exceeding reported levels and causing significant ecological damage. The ruling, stemming from a 2018 lawsuit filed by the Illinois Attorney General, Friends of the Chicago River, and the Sierra Club, declared the hotel a 'public nuisance' for its continuous legal violations dating back to 2008. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul emphasized the importance of protecting the Chicago River, a vital natural resource for recreation and commerce. A hearing to determine penalties will be held in November, as environmental advocates celebrate a significant legal victory.
