United Nations Seeks $47 Billion for 2025 Aid
The United Nations has requested $47 billion in aid for 2025 to assist approximately 190 million people affected by conflict and hunger, as current funding remains below half of needed amounts. The UN's new aid chief, Tom Fletcher, described the situation as an 'unprecedented level of suffering' while highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in 32 countries, including Sudan, Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine. This appeal, the fourth largest in UN history, acknowledges that around 115 million people will not receive adequate support. The UN's 2024 appeal was also cut to $46 billion due to declining donor enthusiasm, and as of last month, only 43% of this year's $50 billion goal has been met. Aid workers have faced tough decisions, resulting in an 80% reduction in food assistance in Syria and diminished services in Yemen. Concerns about U.S. funding cuts under the incoming administration compound fears of dwindling support from major donors as conflicts and climate crises escalate globally.
