Angus Lapsley, a former civil servant who left sensitive Ministry of Defence files at a Kent bus stop in June 2021, has been appointed to a key review of the UK's defence strategy. The classified documents, which contained details about British special forces in Kabul and military movements around Crimea, sparked international tensions, particularly with the U.S. Lapsley's new role involves a comprehensive analysis of troop strength and technological capabilities amidst rising global threats. The review is led by Lord Robertson and includes notable figures like Fiona Hill and General Sir Richard Barrons. Despite the serious breach of security, Lapsley retained his position and is currently NATO's assistant secretary general for defence policy and planning. The strategic defence review is set to report in early 2025 and aims to address pressing military concerns and budgetary challenges.
