Georgia African American studies course
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) will offer the Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies course this year following a decision by Georgia's State Superintendent Richard Woods, who initially opposed the course citing it as a violation of the state's divisive concepts law. However, after receiving clarification from Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr that the law exempts AP courses, Woods reversed his stance. The law, enacted in 2022, prohibits teachings that suggest the U.S. is fundamentally racist but allows for academic courses under specific conditions. GCPS Superintendent Calvin Watts expressed gratitude for community advocacy that led to the course's approval, emphasizing its importance for educational equity. Other districts, including Atlanta and Cobb County, are also set to offer the course. Nevertheless, some political figures continue to scrutinize the decision-making process surrounding the course's approval.
