SpaceX Expected To Win $2B Pentagon Contract For 600-Satellite Golden Dome Defense Network
Elon Musk's SpaceX is poised to receive $2 billion from President Trump's administration to develop a satellite constellation as part of the Golden Dome missile defense project, which aims to track hypersonic missiles, aircraft, and drones threatening the U.S. and its hemisphere. The project, potentially involving up to 600 satellites, was funded through a tax-and-spending bill Trump signed, though no contractor was initially named. In addition to the missile-tracking satellites, SpaceX is also expected to contribute to two other satellite networks: Milnet, for secure military communications, and a system to track ground vehicles. The Golden Dome defense shield is estimated to cost $175 billion, with some analysts suggesting the price could be much higher, and aims for operational readiness by the end of Trump's second term. While the Pentagon has not formally awarded the contracts, SpaceX's involvement marks a significant expansion of its role in U.S. national security, despite concerns about potential vendor lock and the risks of triggering an arms race in space. The project reflects the Trump administration's strategic push for hemispheric defense under the so-called "Monroe Doctrine 2.0."
