Miami-Dade Abandons New Incinerator Plans Amid Public Opposition

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has officially abandoned plans to construct a new waste-to-energy incinerator, following extensive public opposition and high projected costs. In a recent memo, she proposed continuing to transport waste using existing landfill contracts while exploring the possibility of building a new landfill outside the county. The decision was influenced by the destruction of the Doral incinerator in February 2023 and reflects the complexities and legal challenges associated with establishing a new facility. Levine Cava outlined three primary options moving forward: utilizing contracted landfill capacity, constructing a landfill outside the county, or possibly building a replacement waste-to-energy facility, though this last option is deemed costly and legally risky. Environmental advocates have supported the shift away from incineration, urging for waste reduction strategies instead. The next meeting to discuss these options is scheduled for February 19, 2025.
