EU Ends Microsoft Teams Antitrust Probe After Commitment
The European Commission has resolved its antitrust investigation into Microsoft’s bundling of its Teams collaboration platform with Office 365 and Microsoft 365 productivity suites by accepting Microsoft's commitments to unbundle Teams. Microsoft agreed to offer versions of its suites without Teams at a reduced price for the next seven years and to enhance interoperability and data portability with rival collaboration apps for up to ten years. The probe, initiated following complaints from Slack (owned by Salesforce) and alfaview, found that Microsoft’s prior bundling practices gave Teams an unfair competitive advantage in the cloud communication market. The commitments also include making suite pricing and offerings consistent worldwide and publishing relevant technical information to support competition. The Commission views this settlement as a significant step toward opening competition in the collaboration software market and preventing anti-competitive tying practices without resorting to fines or legal disputes. Microsoft’s partial unbundling started in April 2024, but regulators required more extensive changes, culminating in the current agreement sealed in September 2025.
