Apple, Major Asian Chipmakers Exempt From US Tariffs
President Trump announced a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors, but major Asian chipmakers TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix are exempt due to their significant investments in US manufacturing. US officials and trade envoys from Taiwan and South Korea confirmed the exemptions, which led to gains in TSMC's share price and optimism in Taiwan's market. Apple is also exempt after pledging an additional $100 billion to US manufacturing, further supporting the administration's plan to boost domestic chip production. The exemption applies to companies building or committed to build US semiconductor plants, while other foreign chipmakers may still face tariffs. The policy signals that global semiconductor firms must invest in the US to avoid the tariffs. Industry leaders hope the exemptions will reduce supply chain disruptions and consumer price increases.
