Macron Slaps Rama as Leaders Mock Trump's Gaffe
At the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen, a viral video showed Albanian PM Edi Rama joking with French President Emmanuel Macron and Azerbaijan’s Ilham Aliyev that they should apologize for not congratulating them on the “peace deal” President Trump supposedly made between Albania and Azerbaijan. The quip referenced Trump’s repeated gaffe of confusing Albania with Armenia while taking credit for a U.S.-facilitated agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan at a White House meeting in August. The leaders laughed and Macron playfully slapped Rama in the clip, which drew further attention. The incident highlighted amusement among world leaders and renewed scrutiny of Trump’s verbal errors and broader claims — including statements that he had “ended seven wars” and sought a Nobel Peace Prize — which fact-checkers have disputed. While many of Trump’s broader claims have been challenged, the August talks did mark a noted U.S.-facilitated step toward easing long-running tensions in the South Caucasus.
