Mexico Partially Boosts Water Deliveries to Texas
Mexico has agreed to deliver more water to Texas under the 1944 water-sharing treaty after U.S. pressure and threats of tariffs from President Donald Trump. The deal involves immediate transfers from Mexico's Rio Grande tributaries to help Texas farmers, but Mexico will still fall short of its total obligations for the current five-year cycle, having delivered less than 30% of the required water amid severe drought. Both nations reaffirmed the treaty's importance and committed to developing a long-term plan to meet water needs and address Mexico's outstanding water debts. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins praised the agreement, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted her government's ongoing commitment despite persistent challenges. The agreement has temporarily reduced tensions, but major issues around water scarcity and treaty compliance persist. The current cycle of water deliveries ends in October.
