Ukraine Drone Strikes Disrupt 17% of Russia Refining Capacity
Russia is experiencing a significant fuel crisis as Ukrainian drone strikes have severely disrupted its oil refining capacity, knocking out about 17% (approximately 1.1 million barrels per day) of its refining output. Key facilities along the Ryazan–Volgograd corridor and the Ryazan–Moscow pipeline, vital for supplying fuel to Moscow, have been repeatedly targeted, leading to record-high petrol prices and long queues at gas stations across multiple regions including the far east, southern Russia, and annexed Crimea. The strikes have overwhelmed repair efforts, complicated by Western sanctions that restrict access to critical technology and parts, causing many advanced refineries to operate below capacity. While Russia continues exporting crude oil to countries like China and India, domestic refining barely meets internal demand, forcing rationing in some areas and pushing motorists toward more expensive fuel grades. Ukrainian forces have used drones with long ranges to conduct coordinated, repeated attacks designed to maintain pressure on Moscow and influence peace negotiations, resulting in a prolonged crisis that could persist into winter. Despite the shortages affecting civilian fuel supplies, Russia's diesel availability for military and heavy industry remains sufficient, though experts warn the crisis could deepen if attacks continue.
