Panos Anastasiou, a 76-year-old man from Alaska, has been indicted for allegedly sending over 465 violent threats against six U.S. Supreme Court justices and their families over a 16-month period. The Department of Justice revealed that these messages, which included graphic threats of assassination by torture, hanging, and firearms, escalated in severity beginning January 2024. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland emphasized that such threats undermine the justice system and the safety of public officials. Anastasiou faces 22 counts, including nine counts of making threats against a federal judge, with potential penalties of up to 10 years for each count. The indictment reflects a troubling trend of increased threats against federal judges in recent years. Anastasiou made his initial court appearance on September 18, 2024, and a decision on bail eligibility is pending.
