Covered California Enrollment Begins Amid Expected Premiums Surge

As the open enrollment period for health insurance begins on November 1, Californians and Americans nationwide face the prospect of sharply rising premiums due to the potential expiration of enhanced premium tax credits tied to the Affordable Care Act. These tax credits, initially expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, have helped keep coverage affordable for low- and middle-income individuals; however, with Congress in deadlock amid a government shutdown, these subsidies may end by year’s end, leading to premium increases of up to 97% in California and even higher in Mountain West states.
