US Approves $2 Billion Arms Sale to Taiwan

The United States has approved a $2 billion arms sale to Taiwan, which includes the first delivery of advanced surface-to-air missile defense systems, specifically three National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) valued at approximately $1.16 billion, and radar systems worth an estimated $828 million. Taiwan's presidential office expressed gratitude for the decision, which is seen as essential for enhancing the island's defense amid escalating military threats from China. In response, Beijing has condemned the arms sale, pledging to take countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and claiming that such sales undermine its security interests. The U.S. remains Taiwan's strongest unofficial ally, committed to providing defensive resources as it navigates increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, especially following China's recent military exercises encircling the island. China's military drills involved significant deployments, including 153 aircraft and 14 naval vessels, simulating a blockade of key areas around Taiwan. This arms deal is expected to provoke further tensions between the U.S. and China as Taiwan fortifies its defense capabilities under President Lai Ching-te.
