The city of Munich has decided to posthumously honor football legend Franz Beckenbauer by renaming the street surrounding the Allianz Arena to Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz, effective January 7, 2025, marking the first anniversary of his death. Mayor Dieter Reiter emphasized that this is the highest honor the city can bestow and reflects deep respect for Beckenbauer, who is regarded as one of the greatest athletes in Munich's history. He led West Germany to a World Cup victory as both a player in 1974 and a coach in 1990, and enjoyed a storied career with Bayern Munich, winning three European Cups. The new address will be Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5, a nod to his shirt number. Beckenbauer's contributions to football and his charismatic personality are remembered as integral parts of Munich’s culture. Additionally, a statue of Beckenbauer will be placed outside the stadium alongside fellow Bayern Munich legend Gerd Mueller.
