Afghanistan, Pakistan, China Renew Counterterrorism, Economic Cooperation Commitments
At the sixth trilateral meeting in Kabul, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China renewed their commitment to intensify cooperation against regional terrorist groups including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM). Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the need for concrete, verifiable measures from Afghanistan to curb terrorist attacks originating from its soil, noting a surge in cross-border violence. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the importance of economic cooperation, particularly the extension of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan, and supported resuming joint border patrols to maintain regional stability. The three countries also agreed to expand collaboration in political, economic, transit, health, education, and cultural sectors, reflecting a holistic approach beyond security concerns. Meanwhile, experts expressed skepticism about Pakistan’s dual role regarding terrorist groups, suggesting strategic use of the trilateral platform to advance its objectives. These discussions align with broader regional efforts, including India and Russia’s recent reaffirmation of joint counter-terrorism measures amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics.
