New 7.5-ton Weight Limits for M48 Severn Bridge, Businesses Warned of Impact

National Highways will impose a 7.5-tonne weight limit on the M48 Severn Bridge starting May 27, citing deterioration of the bridge's main cables after recent inspections. This restriction aims to ensure safety and will divert heavy goods vehicles to the nearby M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, affecting about 10% of the bridge's daily 32,000 vehicle crossings. The limit is expected to last 12 to 18 months while a medium-term solution is developed, although emergency vehicles and scheduled buses will still be allowed. Local officials and Members of Parliament have criticized the lack of prior consultation and raised concerns about increased business costs, delivery disruptions, and potential traffic congestion and pollution in surrounding areas.
