Cyprus President Calls for Reunification Talks

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides announced his readiness to resume reunification talks concerning the ethnically divided island during his address at the United Nations General Assembly. He emphasized the importance of cooperation with Turkey, stating, 'We cannot change geography. It is an opportunity, not a curse.' The talks have been stalled since 2017, with Turkish Cypriots advocating for a two-state solution while Greek Cypriots prefer a bizonal, bicommunal federation as per UN resolutions. Christodoulides expressed his commitment to dialogue, saying he is prepared to negotiate 'today, not tomorrow.' The ongoing regional tensions, especially concerning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, complicate the situation, yet he remains optimistic about cooperation in the region. As part of his New York visit, he is scheduled to meet with various international officials and business representatives, including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and a Chevron delegation.
