New Zealand allocates $2 billion for Defence Force helicopter replacement
New Zealand's government has announced over $2 billion in funding to replace its Defence Force's ageing maritime helicopters, marking the first phase of a planned $12 billion upgrade of military capabilities. The new helicopters will enhance the defensive and offensive range of the Navy's frigates and expand capabilities for non-combat operations, such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Additionally, nearly $1 billion will be invested over four years to improve Defence Force missions, personnel allowances, estate maintenance, and international engagement. Defence Minister Judith Collins emphasized the increasing global tensions and the necessity for New Zealand to prioritize naval capability and national security, noting that distance no longer ensures protection. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon highlighted that New Zealand faces its most challenging strategic environment in decades, underscoring the need for the country to fulfil its international security responsibilities. A business case for the helicopter replacement will be considered by Cabinet this year, with further Defence announcements expected on Budget Day.
