Russian Drones Destroy Sumy State University Building, Cause Fire

Russian forces launched multiple attacks on Sumy, Ukraine, targeting Sumy State University and other civilian infrastructure on the night of August 17-18. The university suffered significant damage: a main building was destroyed by missile strikes followed by drone attacks, and the gym was severely damaged with half the roof destroyed. Fires broke out as a result of the strikes, with emergency services working to extinguish them and salvage remaining equipment. Residential buildings also sustained damage, with blown-out windows and destroyed balcony frames, prompting the establishment of a mobile headquarters for affected residents. Despite clear evidence of the attacks, the Russian Ministry of Defense denied responsibility, accusing Ukraine of provocation linked to an upcoming meeting between Putin and President Trump. Local officials and university representatives emphasized the severe long-term impact on education and community infrastructure, with restoration expected to be difficult and prolonged.
