Most Turbulent Flight Routes Highlighted Globally

Recent studies conducted by Turbli have identified the most turbulent flight routes globally, with eight of the top ten in Europe involving Switzerland, primarily due to atmospheric conditions over the Alps. The most turbulent global route is between Mendoza, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile, with Santiago being the most turbulent airport. In the United States, routes involving Denver, such as Albuquerque-Denver, are notably turbulent. Turbulence, a leading cause of in-flight injuries, has been responsible for significant incidents, including a fatality on a Singapore Airlines flight in 2024. Despite these findings, extreme turbulence remains rare, and levels are categorized by the Eddy Dissipation Rate, an international turbulence measurement standard.
