SLB (formerly Schlumberger) has successfully demonstrated sustainable lithium production at its Clayton Valley, Nevada, plant, achieving a 96% lithium recovery rate from brine using its proprietary Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology. This method produces lithium 500 times faster than traditional methods while using only 10% of the land and minimizing water usage, significantly reducing environmental impact. Pure Energy Minerals, which owns the Clayton Valley project, will receive a 3% net smelter return royalty once SLB completes its earn-in terms. SLB's breakthrough marks a significant step towards commercial-scale lithium production, with plans to build a full-scale plant capable of producing 10,000 metric tons per year by 2027. SLB's entry into the DLE sector aligns it with other major companies like Exxon Mobil and Rio Tinto, aiming to revolutionize lithium extraction for the energy transition.
