The USS New Jersey (SSN 796), a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, was officially commissioned on September 14, 2024, during a ceremony at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown, New Jersey. The event, attended by around 4,000 people including Governor Phil Murphy, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, veterans, and sailors' families, marked the submarine's integration into the naval fleet. Commanding Officer Cmdr. Steve Halle emphasized the historical significance of the commissioning, which follows years of preparation. The submarine, now the fastest in the U.S. fleet, features interior decorations celebrating New Jersey, including memorabilia from Rutgers University and the New Jersey Devils. This submarine marks the third vessel named after the state and is notable for being the first designed for a fully integrated male and female crew. The ceremony was a major milestone for both the crew and the state, reflecting the Navy's commitment to modern naval capabilities.
