Tigers End Six-Game Slide Over Rangers Behind Skubal's 11 Strikeouts
Matt Vierling's eighth-inning single helped the Detroit Tigers end a season-worst six-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Texas Rangers. Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and recent All-Star Game starter, delivered a dominant performance by striking out 11 batters over 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run and no walks. Skubal heavily relied on his changeup, throwing it 40 times, and maintained his position in the Triple Crown race, leading in ERA and closely trailing in wins and strikeouts. The Rangers managed to tie the game in the seventh on a wild pitch after Skubal left with runners on base, but Detroit took the lead again in the eighth as Gleyber Torres scored on Vierling's hit. Will Vest earned his 16th save by retiring four consecutive batters in the eighth inning. Detroit's Zach McKinstry also contributed with an early RBI single, while Texas left-hander Jacob Latz pitched five innings, replacing Nathan Eovaldi due to back tightness.
