Sweco to Design Major Battery Storage Project in Belgium

Sweco AB has been contracted to design the Green Turtle project, a 700 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium, which will store 2,800 MWh of renewable energy—enough to power 385,000 homes. This facility will help mitigate Belgium's reliance on gas-fired power plants by providing energy during periods of low solar and wind generation, aligning with Europe's energy transition objectives. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2025, with completion expected by 2028.
