Mural of Paola Egonu Defaced in Rome

The artwork, titled 'Italianità', depicted Egonu in her national team jersey with a message against racism, but was defaced with pink paint, altering her skin color and obscuring her features. This act of vandalism has drawn widespread condemnation from politicians, including Rome's mayor, who called it a disgrace and a vile insult. The mural was a response to controversial remarks by right-wing MEP Roberto Vannacci, who suggested Egonu's physical appearance does not embody 'Italianness'. The incident highlights ongoing issues of racism and ignorance in Italy, particularly towards individuals of mixed heritage like Egonu, who has faced discrimination despite her achievements. Laika, the artist, emphasized that such racism is a 'cancer' that Italy must address.
