Demaurea Grant, a 29-year-old man with a violent criminal history, was arrested in Gastonia, North Carolina, for the murder of off-duty Jacksonville corrections officer Bradley McNew. McNew was shot while intervening in a domestic dispute at a truck stop on October 12, 2024, where Grant allegedly threatened him with a gun before firing shots from a vehicle, ultimately striking McNew. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Grant without incident, and he faces multiple charges including second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A woman who was with Grant during the incident was taken into custody on unrelated charges. Sheriff T.K. Waters emphasized the importance of accountability in the case, highlighting McNew's bravery in trying to assist someone in distress. Grant will be extradited to Florida to face the charges against him.
