Columbus Council Plans LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission Amid Rights Concerns
Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin announced the formation of an LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission to serve as the official voice of the queer community to city leaders and ensure inclusive policies amid recent state and federal legislation perceived as targeting LGBTQ+ rights. The commission, composed of 13 members serving three-year terms, will meet quarterly to advise the city council and mayor, monitor legislation, recommend policies, and promote community engagement to protect and advance LGBTQ+ interests. Hardin emphasized that this initiative is about more than Pride celebrations; it is a permanent effort to enshrine inclusivity in city government and create safe spaces, particularly for transgender individuals. The announcement was supported by Ohio Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio and other LGBTQ+ elected officials, who highlighted the commission as a model for other communities and a counter to hostile rhetoric from the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Ohio government. This commission follows Cincinnati’s lead, which formed a similar body earlier in the year, and aims to demonstrate Columbus as a welcoming city where LGBTQ+ people can live openly and thrive. Community leaders and advocates expressed hope that the commission will help shape informed legislation and strengthen protections for LGBTQ+ residents statewide.
