Charlotte bids to host CIAA Tournament from 2027 to 2029

Charlotte is actively pursuing the return of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments for 2027 through 2029, after previously hosting the event from 2006 to 2020. The city, in collaboration with the Charlotte Sports Foundation and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, aims to reclaim this significant tournament, which celebrated Black culture and generated substantial economic benefits during its tenure in Charlotte. The event moved to Baltimore in 2021, a decision that disappointed many in Charlotte's HBCU community, who felt the city underestimated the tournament's importance. Leaders highlighted the economic impact, with the last tournament in Charlotte drawing around 140,000 fans and generating approximately $43.7 million. They emphasized the tournament's role in enhancing local business and community spirit, comparing its vibrancy to a homecoming event for HBCUs. The bid aims to leverage Charlotte's rich cultural attractions and hospitality to secure the return of this marquee event.
