India Reports First Suspected Mpox Case
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing Mpox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), with significant case increases particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries. India has reported its first suspected case of Mpox in Delhi and is actively monitoring the situation, with the patient in isolation and stable. Symptoms of Mpox include rashes, fever, and other flu-like signs, and the virus primarily spreads through close contact, including sexual contact. The WHO has highlighted a new clade of the virus, Clade Ib, which poses a higher risk of transmission and severity. Health authorities in India and Zambia are taking precautions and emphasizing the importance of contact tracing to contain the spread. Vaccines for smallpox have shown efficacy against Mpox, and the WHO recommends several vaccines for protection.
