Gabon President Limits Government Holiday Travel

Gabon’s interim president, Gen Oligui Nguema, has imposed a ban on foreign holidays for members of his transitional government, limiting their vacation time to a maximum of one week. This announcement was made on state television and is perceived as an effort to increase government officials' connection with local populations ahead of the first anniversary of his coup. Speculation is growing that Nguema may be preparing to run for president in the upcoming 2025 elections, though he has not confirmed this intention. The new rules are seen as a contrast to former President Ali Bongo, known for his overseas travels, and may be designed to improve Nguema's public image. Exceptions to the holiday restrictions will only be made for extraordinary circumstances or health issues. Despite owning properties in the US, it remains unclear if these restrictions will also apply to Nguema himself, who would likely still be able to travel abroad for official duties.
