NV Energy CEO Resigns Amid Overcharging Scandal

Doug Cannon has resigned as president and CEO of NV Energy to join AEP Transmission, as the company faces a major regulatory investigation into customer overcharges. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada found NV Energy misclassified accounts, leading to over $17 million in overcharges for about 60,000 residential customers between 2017 and 2024, with additional impacts on multifamily housing customers and possible misclassifications dating back to 2001. NV Energy limited refunds to six months, returning less than $2 million to affected customers, which has sparked calls for a full investigation and expanded refunds. Consumer advocates, including the Sierra Club, have strongly criticized NV Energy for violating public trust and endangering vulnerable customers. Brandon Barkhuff, previously senior vice president, general counsel, and chief compliance officer, has been named Cannon's successor.
