GKN Aerospace Expands Additive Production in Connecticut Supporting Pratt & Whitney Engines
GKN Aerospace is expanding its Newington, Connecticut facility to include additive manufacturing capabilities for the fan case mount ring (FCMR), a critical component of Pratt & Whitney's geared turbofan (GTF) engines powering the Airbus A220 and Embraer E195-E2. This expansion, supported by a $2.5 million state grant, aims to centralize the additive production process currently split between Sweden and the US, with full serial production targeted by the end of 2025 and additive operations in Newington expected to begin in 2027. The proprietary additive process reduces material consumption by over 70%, shortens lead times, improves production precision, and strengthens supply chains by offering an alternative manufacturing method. The Newington site expansion will create new jobs and enhance GKN Aerospace's US presence, driven by local workforce skills and proximity to major customers like Pratt & Whitney. While the Trollhättan, Sweden facility will continue operations, additive fabrication for the FCMR will be scaled up in Connecticut to support broader market demand and efficiency goals rather than tariff considerations. Executives emphasize the sustainability, predictability, and transformative technical benefits of additive manufacturing in aerospace production.
