Ian Paterson Ordered to Testify in Inquests

Disgraced former breast surgeon Ian Paterson, currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for wounding patients, has refused to attend the inquests into the deaths of 62 of his patients, claiming bias in the investigation. Although he was ordered to give evidence remotely by Coroner Richard Foster, Paterson cited health concerns, lack of legal representation, and inadequate preparation facilities as reasons for his absence. The coroner, however, expressed disappointment and emphasized the importance of hearing Paterson's evidence on a case-by-case basis alongside other witnesses. Paterson's refusal to participate has been perceived as an attempt to delay the proceedings, which are expected to take eight months. The first inquest will focus on the death of Chloe Nikitas, who died in 2008 after undergoing an unnecessary mastectomy. The legal proceedings continue amid concerns regarding fairness and due process.
