Tropical Storm Ernesto Gains Strength in Caribbean
Tropical Storm Ernesto is intensifying as it moves through the Caribbean, currently located near Guadeloupe and expected to strengthen into a hurricane within 24 hours. The storm is projected to impact Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding, prompting school closures and the activation of the National Guard in Puerto Rico. Wind speeds have increased to 50 mph, and a hurricane watch has been issued for the US and British Virgin Islands as well as Vieques and Culebra. Direct Relief is closely monitoring the situation and has pre-positioned emergency supplies throughout the region to assist with disaster response. As Ernesto approaches, residents are taking precautions, securing their homes and seeking shelter. The storm may also threaten Bermuda later in the week.
