James Johnson resigns as CEO of Football Australia, Heather Garriock named interim replacement
James Johnson has resigned as CEO of Football Australia after a transformative five and a half years leading the organization through one of the most successful eras in Australian soccer history. During his tenure, Johnson managed the sport through the Covid-19 pandemic, achieved record revenue growth, and oversaw the successful hosting of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and secured hosting rights for the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup. He also implemented significant reforms such as the 15-year Vision, Club Licensing Regulations, and the Player Transfer System, and played a role in the formal separation of the A-Leagues into the Australian Professional Leagues. Johnson's leadership included high-profile coaching appointments and the launch of the Australian Championship second division competition. Former Matildas player and Football Australia board director Heather Garriock has been named interim CEO while a search for a permanent replacement is underway. Johnson will remain with Football Australia temporarily to aid in a smooth transition as the organization prepares for upcoming major tournaments.
