Father starved daughter
Julius Fineday, Sr., 42, was sentenced to five years in prison for the neglect that led to the death of his seven-year-old daughter, Jewel Sky Fineday, on Christmas Day 2022. Fineday admitted to willfully depriving Jewel of food, healthcare, and basic needs for nearly a year, resulting in her malnutrition and a Group A Streptococcal infection. Chief Judge Patrick Schiltz noted that Jewel's condition was described as 'not just thin, but skeletal' at the time of her death and emphasized that neglecting a child has serious consequences for caregivers. Fineday's plea of guilty was considered a mitigating factor in sentencing, although he could have faced a harsher penalty. Jewel's grandmother, Sharon M. Rosebear, has also been convicted on similar charges and awaits sentencing. The case was prosecuted federally due to its occurrence on a Native American reservation, and the community mourns Jewel, remembered lovingly in her obituary.
